One of the most in-demand of UK session players, saxophonist Alex Garnett is perhaps best known on the jazz scene for his superb work with Ray Gelato’s Giants, but can equally well be found in settings that range from Jools Holland to Van Morrison. The list of international stars Alex has worked with covers the fields of the best of blues and popular music, with Paul Weller, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson and Albert King a fair sample.
Alex Garnett was born in 1970 into a family of musicians in London. Although classically trained from a young age he was soon influenced by his father’s love of jazz and saxophone, often following him to gigs or listening to the many musicians that would come to “jam” at the family home.
Living and working as a musician since 1993, Alex has enjoyed a varied musical career, not just as a pro jazz artist but also an in-demand session, studio and commercial saxophonist. Performing throughout the year with Europe’s leading big bands and creative jazz ensembles, Garnett is also one of the few headlining UK jazz musicians of the current Ronnie Scott’s All Stars pool. Due to his apprenticeship and understanding of jazz tradition, he is a regular sideman of choice for many of the top visiting American artists when touring in Europe, and has himself performed in over 30 countries worldwide appearing at such prestigious venues as the Blue Note, Birdland, as well as the Perugia, North Sea, Granada, Vittoria, Rochester NY, Barcelona, Montreux, and Oslo Jazz Festivals (and more!). His varied performance CV includes artists such as Sir John Dankworth, Jimmy Page, Wynton Marsalis, Pete King, Alan Barnes, Humphrey Littleton, Doris Troy, Don Weller, Jack Parnell, Scott Hamilton, Seamus Blake, Joel Frahm, Carlene Anderson, Ruby Turner, Sam Moore, Gilad Atzmon, Van Morrison, Houston Person, Jools Holland and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. His personal musical influences include Lennie Tristano, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson and Harold Land amongst others.
