The Political Party with Matt Forde and Sir Alan Haselhurst

25 June 2014

Part of The Political Party evenings

Matt Forde (as seen on Have I Got News For You, Russell Howard’s Good News & This Week) hosts a comedy night combining topical stand-up and a big interview with a political heavyweight. A celebration of politics with “a first-class comic” (The Guardian).

The guest this month will be Conservative MP and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Alan Haselhurst.

An unashamed political fan, Matt had a career in politics before becoming a stand-up comedian, radio presenter and writer. As well as hosting his own show on talkSPORT he has appeared on The Now Show and The News Quiz. He also writes for 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Stand Up For The Week and Russell Howard’s Good News.

The Political Party podcast is regularly in the Top 10 comedy podcasts on iTunes with over 30,000 subscribers.

Sir Alan is widely regarded as the best Speaker of the House we never had. He served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons under the legendary Betty Boothroyd, Michael Martin and John Bercow until 2010. Possessing a natural authority, his interventions became legendary during many heated exchanges in the Commons. Originally elected in 1970, he has only spent 3 years out of Parliament since, spending an impressive 41 years as an MP. With the exception of Harold Wilson, he has been a Member of Parliament during the reign of every Prime Minister since Ted Heath. Sir Alan has a unique perspective on British politics having been a part of it for so long. From the 3 day week of the 70s, through the social upheaval and economic radicalism of the 80s, to the rise of new Labour in the 90s, the austerity of the 00’s and now the world of the coalition. Sir Alan has seen it all. Present at many great moments in modern Parliamentary history, Sir Alan asked the first question of Margaret Thatcher’s final Prime Minister’s Questions.

Charming and funny, this promises to be a special night in the company of a man who has been an integral part of the House of Commons for almost as long as Ed Miliband has been alive.

“Perfectly timed” Metro
“Good solid gags and a great deal of charm” Time Out
“A class act… you definitely won’t be disappointed’ George Galloway
